Spring is here, the sun is shining, and my internal thermostat is already questioning its life choices. Between warm weather and those oh-so-fun personal heat waves, I’ve had to get creative. That’s where my Springtime Cool Down Kit comes in – a playful mix of things that keep me comfortable, calm, and maybe even a little fabulous.
It’s also about staying cool when life heats up.
Here’s what’s in my kit this season.
5 Essentials for Cooling the Body
A Handheld Fan (aka my new best friend)
Whether it’s floral, foldable, or slightly dramatic, this fan is my constant companion. A few graceful flicks and I feel like a movie star from a vintage film.
Cooling Face Mist
One spritz and I’m instantly refreshed. It’s like giving your skin a sip of iced water. I like to put a few ice cubes and peppermint leaves in it to boost the cooling power.
Frozen Grapes, Blueberries, and Iced Tea on Repeat
Frozen fruit is like nature’s candy – sweet, refreshing, and ready whenever I need a little cool-down snack. Delicious, hydrating, and doesn’t involve turning on the stove.
I love buying in-season fruit on sale and freezing it for when I need that sweet frozen snack.
Breezy Loungewear
I want soft, breathable fabrics that feel like a hug from a summer breeze. Pajamas or sundresses that let me float through the day.
Cooling Eye Mask I Keep in the Fridge
It’s soothing, spa-like, and makes me feel instantly calmer – even if I’m just sitting on my couch.
5 Essentials for Cooling the Mood – The Emotional Lifesavers
Music that makes me dance, laugh, or just breathe a little easier.
My “Let It Go” Playlist
Here are a few of my go-to songs that never fail to lift my spirits:
- “Dancing Queen” by ABBA
- “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
- “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles
- “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John
- “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire
- “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae
I play this playlist when I’m getting ready in the morning, doing the dishes, or just need a little boost of joy in the middle of the day.
I hit play, and suddenly the heat (and the drama) melts away.
A Morning Minute of Peace
I step outside with a warm cup of tea or coffee, take a few deep breaths, and let the morning sunshine work its magic before the chaos begins.
A good porch is a blessing and a sanctuary.
Avoiding Overcommitment
Just because the sun is out doesn’t mean I need to say yes to everything. It is ok to say No.
Protecting my peace and time is a top priority.
A Note on My Fridge
It says, “Drink water and don’t engage in nonsense today.” A daily reminder I take very seriously.
I like to rotate a few of these too, just for fun:
- “Hydrate and mind your business.”
- “You are not required to set yourself on fire to keep others warm.”
- “Take a breath. Take a sip. Take it easy.”
- “Mood for today: breezy and unbothered.”
- “Did you eat something? Drink something? Laugh at something?”
- “Pause before you say yes. Especially to things you don’t want to do.”
- “If it’s not a full-body yes, it’s a no.”
- “Smile. Or roll your eyes. Whichever feels better today.”
- “Cooler heads (and hearts) always win.”
Cold Sips and Chilled Bites: My Favorite Cold Soups
Sometimes, the best way to cool off is from the inside out. This is where a cold soup comes in handy.
They’re refreshing, light, and surprisingly satisfying.
Here are three that are always in rotation with recipes down below:
- Gazpacho: A classic Spanish tomato-based soup that’s zesty, fresh, and full of garden flavor.
- Cucumber Yogurt Soup (aka Cacik or Tarator): Creamy, tangy, and perfect for hot afternoons. It’s like a spa day in a bowl.
- Chilled Pea Soup: Sweet peas blended with mint and a touch of cream make for a vibrant green bowl of springtime comfort.
Gazpacho Recipe
- 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
- 1 cucumber, peeled and chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, chopped
- 1/2 red onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Chill in the fridge for a few hours. Serve cold with fresh herbs and a drizzle of olive oil.
Cucumber Yogurt Soup Recipe
- 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
- 1 large cucumber, grated or finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill or mint
- Salt to taste
Mix all ingredients together. Add a little cold water to thin if needed. Chill and serve with a drizzle of olive oil or crushed walnuts.
Chilled Pea Soup Recipe
- 3 cups frozen peas, thawed
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt or light cream
- 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
- Salt and pepper to taste
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Adjust thickness with cold water if needed. Chill and serve with a dollop of yogurt or a few extra peas on top.
Final Thoughts: Stay Cool, Inside and Out
My cool-down kit changes with the seasons, but the goal stays the same: to feel good, keep it light, and embrace the joy in small things.
Whether it’s a spritz of mist, a chilled snack, or a moment of silence, I’ve learned that staying cool is partly about what you do and partly about how you carry yourself.
So here’s to spring – may it be breezy, easy, and just the right kind of refreshing.
