Many of us, when we enter our 60s, feel more grateful for each passing day, more confident in our decisions, and more able to make better choices about how to spend our time.
But we also notice quite a few more physical changes. In fact, we sometimes notice so many changes in our hair, eyes, and skin that we may wonder, “What isn’t changing?”
The beauty industry has created various products to solve our aging hurdles, and today we’re focusing on what we can do to solve six of our biggest beauty problems.
Beauty Problem #1
The first problem that many of us deal with is changes to our hair. As the density of our hair decreases, it can appear thinner. It can also look duller and feel drier – especially during the winter when we’re indoors with forced air heat.
I’ve found three products that have made a big difference in how my hair looks. The first one is from Mielle Organics called Rosemary Mint Scalp and Hair Strengthening Oil. It’s a nutrient-rich, intensive formula which helps nourish hair follicles, smooth split ends and help with our dry scalp. I like to apply it once a week as a treatment.
A second hair product I use is Roz Willow Glen Treatment Oil. This oil deeply moisturizes the scalp and hair, and if you color your hair, it helps protect the color from fading. It can be used weekly or anytime your hair or scalp is feeling dry. Using both of these products has resulted in my hair looking much softer and shinier.
The third hair product I use is a wiglet from Paula Young. There are many different versions and sizes of this wiglet depending on what area you wish to cover and its size. I love the fact that when I’m having a particularly challenging hair day, it can add some needed volume to my thin hair.
Beauty Problem #2
Perhaps your brows have gotten sparser, whiter and grayer – or maybe you’ve lost the brow tails or brow hairs at the front of your brows – or perhaps a combination of these things. The products I’ve found to be lifesavers – or rather brow savers – are these: an eyebrow stencil, products that have built in fibers to add volume to the brows, a brow gel that effectively covers gray and white brow hairs and products that are specifically made for those of us with grey and white brow hairs.
Stencil
An eyebrow stencil can help us in three ways: first, it allows us to quickly fill in our brows because it gives us a pattern to use. Second, it helps assure that our brows match each other, and third, since stencil kits come with many different brow stencil shapes, we can find one that not only is close to our own brow shape but can also enhance it. The stencil I recommend is one that has an elastic band that goes around the head, so we have both hands free.
Added Fibers
A product I love which contains added fibers that can help our brows look fuller is Elf’s very inexpensive Wow Brow.
Brow Gel
What’s interesting about our white and grey brow hairs is that they have a different texture from our original brow hairs. Because we’ve lost melanin pigment which keeps them flexible, our brows become coarser, sometimes slightly thicker and can be wiry because they’re more prone to dryness. Because of these changes, not all pigmented brow gels will adhere to those white and grey hairs. One of the best brow gels I have tried is Maybelline’s Brow Fast Sculpt Gel Mascara.
Products for Grey Brows
Those of us with grey or white brow hairs who want to use a grey eyebrow pencil or powder know it’s very hard to find these products since only a few makeup companies make products for grey brows. However, one company that specializes in doing so is Eye Embrace.
They have both brow powders and pencils in 7 different shades of grey from cool light grey to warm greys to brown greys. So, you will definitely find a grey color that will match your brows. If you’re interested in this product, be sure to use the code Elise to get 5% off.

Beauty Problem #3
Our eyelids become more discolored due to sun damage, hyperpigmentation and thinning skin. This can make parts of our eyelids look darker which, in turn, makes our eyes look darker and hence, smaller. Covering up eyelid discoloration with makeup helps us look refreshed and our eyes look bigger and brighter.
The wonderfully easy fix for this problem is an eye primer that is close to the color of our skin tone. In addition to covering up discoloration, an eye primer also prevents eyeshadow from creasing or smudging.
Some of the best eye primers I’ve found are Urban Decay’s Eye Primer potion in the matte shade called “Eden” and Sigma’s stick eye primer stick. But my favorite that has the very best coverage is Makeup by Mario’s Master Eye Prep and Set Primer.

Beauty Problem #4
Here we will cover another eye-related problem – specifically, our eyes becoming more hooded and looking smaller.
The products I recommend are two wonderfully handy and convenient small eyeshadow palettes: Elf’s “I Love You a Latte” palette which costs $3.00 or Natasha Denona’s “Mini Eye Sculpt” eyeshadow palette which has one additional shade and costs $27.00. Both are all-matte palettes and contain a range of light to dark neutral colors that work for all of us – regardless of eye color.
Applying the lightest color across our eyelids makes our eyes look bigger. In the crease, combine the next two lightest shades. And if your eyes are hooded, make sure to apply these two combined colors not only in the crease, but also slightly above the crease so the color will show up. By bringing the shade above the crease, you’ll also increase the footprint of the eye which makes the eyes look larger.
Also, carry the colors straight across the crease rather than curving down and following the downward slope of the crease since this application method helps lift the eyes. Then take the deepest brown shade and pat it on the outer part of the crease and lid. Apply these same two colors just on the outer third under the bottom lashes and bring it up to meet the other colors. Using these same colors on the lid as well as under the lashes makes the entire eye area look more cohesive.
Beauty Problem #5
Most of us have probably also noticed that applying eyeliner has gotten a bit trickier with the passing years since the texture of our eyelids has changed and possibly our vision has changed as well. That’s why I highly recommend these three products: a magnifying mirror or magnifying glasses (or both), a gel eyeliner that easily glides across the eyelids, and an angled eyebrow brush.
A gel eyeliner I highly recommend that has been developed specifically for mature eyes is from a company called Revant Cosmetics. It’s formulated to be gentle, non-drying and long-wearing, is ultra smooth and glides on effortlessly without tugging. It’s also smudge-proof and crease-proof all day. Beauty Problem #6
And the final problem we will discuss today is the change we experience with our eyelashes. If you feel that your lashes have become thinner, shorter, straighter and lighter in color, you’d be absolutely right.
I’ve recently discovered an amazing new mascara from the drugstore brand Versed which comes in both brown and black. What makes this mascara stand out is that it beautifully lifts, lengthens and defines our lashes with no clumps whatsoever. It’s also water resistant and has an extremely lightweight formula. This means that it not only glides on easily, but it also doesn’t weigh down our lashes so it’s easier for us to curl them.
I hope you’ve found today’s information helpful for solving some of the biggest beauty challenges we face after 60. If you’d like more help with hooded eyes or eyeliner application, be sure to check out these two videos.
