At 69, I’m on the brink of three major life changes – and I can’t believe how different this season looks compared to what I once imagined.
This month alone:
- I’m getting married.
- I’m moving to a new town.
- I’m starting a brand-new job in a new law firm.
All at the same time.
Honestly? I’m equal parts excited and terrified. Change is never easy, no matter how old we are. But here’s the surprising part – instead of feeling like I’m winding down, I feel more alive and engaged than I have in years.
And that’s what I want to share with you: it’s never too late to embrace something new.
Change Is Uncomfortable – But That’s Not a Bad Thing
When we reach our 60s and beyond, society tends to send subtle messages about what we “should” be doing:
- Slowing down.
- Sticking with the familiar.
- Avoiding unnecessary risks.
But what if that narrative is outdated?
Every new chapter comes with uncertainty. Whether it’s moving, dating, learning a new skill, or starting a fresh job, change can feel overwhelming. It’s natural to wonder, “Am I too old for this?”
But here’s what I’ve learned: being uncomfortable often means you’re growing.
The butterflies in your stomach? That’s not fear – it’s excitement in disguise.
Reinvention Keeps Us Vibrant
New adventures, big or small, add depth to our lives.
Whether it’s relocating to a different area, re-entering the workforce, saying “yes” to a new relationship, or taking that dream trip, these experiences shake us out of routine and remind us that we’re still capable of learning, adapting, and thriving.
At 69, I find myself:
- Meeting new people.
- Learning new skills at work.
- Exploring a new community.
- Building a new relationship with my soon-to-be husband.
Each of these opportunities is adding richness to my story. They’re proof that reinvention isn’t just for the young – it’s available to anyone who chooses it.
Courage Over Comfort
Here’s the truth many of us discover later in life: comfort zones are overrated.
They may feel safe, but they can quietly drain our energy and curiosity.
Choosing courage doesn’t mean you have to make sweeping, dramatic moves (though you can). Sometimes it simply means:
- Signing up for that class you’ve been thinking about.
- Saying “yes” to a coffee date with someone new.
- Exploring a side hustle or volunteer opportunity.
Courage is a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
The Adventure Is Still Ahead
As women over 60, we have wisdom and resilience that only life experience can bring. These qualities make us uniquely equipped to handle change – perhaps even better than when we were younger.
This stage of life isn’t about winding down. It’s about choosing what matters, taking bold steps (even if they’re small), and staying open to whatever life still wants to offer us.
I’m not saying it’s easy. Some mornings I still wake up wondering, What have I gotten myself into?
But deep down, I know this:
The best stories often start with a little nervousness and a leap into the unknown.
If change is knocking on your door, don’t shy away. You’re not too old. You’re just getting started.
What About You?
